Step 1 – Safety

First things first, disconnect the spark plug before you start anything else.

Then, put a simple block of wood wedged against the blade. This stops any movement that could result in injury while you are trying to sharpen or clean the blade.

Pro tip: If there are large chunks missing of the blade, or if rust has taken over more than half the surface area then replacement might be a wiser option than sharpening.

Work gloves are also an important part of this exercise as they give additional protection against cuts and scrapes.

And lastly but by no means least: eye protection.

Step 2 – Access the Blade

Tilt the mower onto its side, ensuring the air filter and carburetor face upwards to prevent oil leakage and damage. Stabilize the mower using a clamp or by securing it against a solid surface. With the mower securely positioned, you can now access the blade easily for cleaning and sharpening.

Step 3 – Clean the Blade

Start by using a stiff brush to scrape off as much grass and dirt build-up as possible. If there’s more stubborn grime clinging on there, you might have to step up your game with a putty knife or a similar tool.

Once all the gross build-up has been removed, it’s time for some secondary cleaning with good old soap and water.

Make sure you dry off the blade thoroughly afterwards. Water left behind could cause rusting, and we certainly don’t want that.

Step 4 – Sharpen the Blade with a File or Angle Grinder

Sharpening of the blade can be accomplished using either a file or an angle grinder, and both methods are quite effective.

If you’re going for a file, ensure that it’s a mill bastard file. The first step to sharpening your blade with this tool is by running the file along the cutting edge of the blade in one direction only – from inside out – while maintaining the same angle as before. It’s vital to use steady, smooth strokes for this process and avoid any back-and-forth motion which could affect the sharpness negatively.

If you’re going to use the angle grinder put some safety goggles on, run the grinder along the edge of your blade until you see shiny metal. Be sure to follow the contour of your blade and do not grind too much off. We don’t want an overly thin or weak cutting edge!

Step 5 – Reconnect Spark Plug

Before we proceed back to that green sea of grass, there’s one final but crucial step left in our lawn mower blade sharpening adventure. We need to reconnect the spark plug.

Step 6 – Test the Mower

Start the lawn mower and listen attentively to its hum — it should sound smooth and steady indicating that it’s running efficiently. If you hear any abnormal noises or feel unusual vibrations, turn off the machine immediately and recheck your work.

Assuming everything sounds as it should, proceed with cutting a small patch of grass. It should slice cleanly through creating an even carpet of mown grass, unlike dull blades. If you’re not satisfied with your work, simply do it again.
